Artist's Statement

I am a Tasmanian artist, my influences having come from our spectacular environment. I was born in the UK in 1959, and in 1963 migrated with my family to Tasmania. Stunned by Tasmania’s wild beauty we enjoyed exploring our wild coastlines and rainforests. I have been inspired over the years by the impressionists and romantics and our many wonderful local artists. I am particularly fond of our changing seasons – wild autumn displays, dramatic seas and skies. Nature, calm and serene or wild and unpredictable, offers both solace and inspiration.

I use a vibrant orchestration of colour from a specialised palette, using form and texture to produce work with a brooding sense of emotion. These techniques have evolved over the years through experimentation. Using palette knife, fingers and rag, with limited brush work, the end result is a tactile environment that takes on a life of its own and draw us in - one that dramatises and shares with you my passion for our magnificent environment, its power and importance in this ever-changing world. I feel that in many ways my works mirror the twists and turns of life (“life – a work in progress!”).

Having exhibited extensively in Southern Tasmania in solo shows, as a member of Robin-Mary Calvert’s group, Mistress’ Apprentices, and with other groups, I am currently running an Artist in Residence oil painting workshop at Ogilvie High School with Grade 9/10 Studio Art students. Our focus is on autumn trees and the girls are I are looking forward to exhibiting their work at the Moonah Arts Centre from 26 May to 14 June 2010.

In the future I hope to continue working in this vein, and also to pursue training in the area of Art Therapy.

Thank you for your interest in my work - please contact me through my website should you be interested in commissioning me to craft something personal for you.
